Video
I craft the most complete, unambiguous story a brand wants to tell—and tug the heartstrings while doing it.
…is not just about knowing which lens to choose or how to light the scene, but also making sure that the overarching objective of the final product is well understood and that we hit our target. From initial interviews with the client to regular talks with the production team, and on through revisions and, eventually, a final cut, I’m along for every step of the journey. Here’s a client testimonial for Freelancer.com that was filmed in Provo, Utah while I was in Sydney, Australia.
Creative direction
…is one of the most rewarding types of video I work on, because it is inherently the most authentic. My job here is to compose my shot, ensure audio is within range, and then do everything I can to help the talent forget the camera is even there. It’s most fulfilling when even I am shocked by the candor of a response. Here is a series of documentary-style testimonial videos I shot on location at several gyms along the Eastern US.
Documentary-style
Unscripted testimonials
…can often lead to some similarly powerful moments, but also lean heavily on the edit to ensure a tightness that the longer-form documentary pieces don’t require. Here are a couple of client stories that I captured for a remote coaching company.
Scripted promos
…call for a stronger balance of careful copywriting in pre-production (to ensure a naturalness when we finally call “action”). With fewer variables at play during a shoot, it’s possible to experiment with unique, boundary-pushing formats and executions, which can lead to some captivating results. Here are several promotional videos scripted (by yours truly, of course) to achieve a more precise, polished product.
iPhone video
…is a powerful tool in the videographer’s tool chest, allowing a significant compression of the entire planning, filming and editing process. It also creates a final product that is often preferred (especially in the age of social media) to a more glossy, highly-produced video. Here’s one example of a simple, fun, energetic project shot entirely on my iPhone.
Educational video
…is where I put on my cinematographer hat and, more importantly, my producer hat. The instructor always knows more about the subject than I do, but my job here is to make them look, sound and come off their very best. I not only ensure that the shot is clean, the lighting is right and the audio sounds great, but I help coach the talent on their delivery to maximize the authority, credibility and clarity of their lesson. Here are some examples of educational content filmed for an in-house streaming platform, LearnRx.
